This is a dormer addition to a single-family home built in 1957, located along the South Shore of Long Island, directly off of one of the many water canals of the Great South Bay. In addition to creating a second-floor bedroom and renovating the existing adjacent office space, we were hired to design a new front façade with an entry porch. We brought elements such as board and batten from the Victorian Era into a reverse double gable with a strong stone element to anchor it along the ground level. We added that same stone along the entire East façade with a board and batten element above the garage for continuity. To enhance the verticality of the redesigned roof line, we made sure to combine the existing ground level bay window with the new bay window in the added second level bedroom. With intention to increase the light to that bedroom, we added another small dormer along the South façade for a casement window. This also opened an unobstructed view to the Great South Bay from within that space. To complement the new façade, we decided to remove the unconventional shaped porch with a more contemporary design that worked within the existing landscape and driveway making room for a sitting area and oversize planter.
